to
kick off
cat week here at
Evocative Photography we present
Norman the resident cat of the Cochrane & Area Humane Society . . .

Norman is the Cochrane & Area Humane Society resident cat who also works hard as a companion animal tester. He has worked at the shelter since 1997. Norman offers his services to determine how well a potential dog or cat adoptee may get along with cats.
Since we often don’t know the history of the animals that come into our shelter, Norman helps us fill in some of the blanks. This is a slightly risky job but Norman is very brave and is quick to disappear if faced with an unfriendly animal!
Norman is the test for dogs to see how well they respond to cats . . .
a test that our boy Jake probably didn’t
do well at… but we’re
working on
that.

it’s
that time
of year again . . .
when we turn our clocks forward
by one hour before we go to sleep.
how are you liking that idea Gary?

. . . too bad we couldn’t
have done it
at 3PM on
Friday.

when I was thirteen in junior high we had a designated time during school to read a book for thirty minutes.
I chose to read “Cat’s Eye” by Margaret Atwood, a story about a mature woman remembering her youth.
up to that point I had been a reader of fluffy teen books like the sweet valley high series.
“Cat’s Eye” had a profound influence on all the books I chose to read after.
I never knew how artful story telling could be.

on Valentine’s day this year Margaret Atwood was to appear at the University of Calgary for a reading and book signing.
this was going to be a big day for me . . . meeting the woman I greatly admired for most of my life.
during the reading Ms. Atwood chose a poem about her cat entering heaven,
whom she was extremely close to, that had passed away.
it was both humourous and touching and
I felt her sense of loss.
so when we caught a glimpse of her . . .

. . . I had butterflies in anticipation of meeting such a beautiful soul.
she had a depth of kindness in her eyes . . .

. . . and the hands of a prolific writer.

when I found out that she wrote children’s books I couldn’t stop myself from making a purchase for two young girls who may one day grow up being inspired by Margaret Atwood.

in honour of International Women’s Day I thought
what better time to share my story
of how one woman can
profoundly influence
a life.

whenever I listen to any of his songs, he never fails to put a smile on my face . . .
from the Stompin Tom Connor’s website:
We must regretfully announce today the passing of the Great and Patriotic Stompin’ Tom Connors. He died this March 6th 2013 with his Family seeing him off. His family have given us a message from Tom that he wanted passed along to all of you upon his death:
“Hello friends, I want all my fans, past, present, or future, to know that without you, there would have not been any Stompin’ Tom.”
“It was a long hard bumpy road, but this great country kept me inspired with it’s beauty, character, and spirit, driving me to keep marching on and devoted to sing about its people and places that make Canada the greatest country in the world.”
“I must now pass the torch, to all of you, to help keep the Maple Leaf flying high, and be the Patriot Canada needs now and in the future.”
“I humbly thank you all, one last time, for allowing me in your homes, I hope I continue to bring a little bit of cheer into your lives from the work I have done.”
Sincerely,
Your Friend always,
Stompin’ Tom Connors
he will be missed.
